Faith in the Public Square

June 3 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

Dear Friends,

I write to formally invite you to a conference hosted by the Anglican Diocese of Eastern Newfoundland and Labrador on Saturday, June 3, 2017 called Faith in the Public Square to look at the contribution of faith communities to the wider social fabric of our province. As Diocesan Bishop, I will be chairing the gathering and giving a short opening talk. This conference was inspired from our last Diocesan Synod, The Church Has Left The Building.

Our morning speaker will be Sister Elizabeth Davis, member of the Sisters of Mercy, former CEO of Eastern Health, and recipient of the Order of Canada. Our afternoon speaker following lunch will be the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson, the 26th Governor General of Canada (1999-2005). In the second part of the afternoon both speakers will share in a panel discussion moderated by me and responding to questions from the audience and media representatives.

With invitations extended to members of Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Sikh and Buddhist communities along with other community partners and representatives of municipal, provincial and federal levels of government, the conference will explore the place of faith in Newfoundland and Labrador and examine the ways in which faith is expressed outside of places of worship. Recognizing that most Newfoundlanders and Labradoreans identify with a church, temple, mosque or synagogue, we will investigate their social impact in areas like housing, poverty and mental health. With many thousands of volunteer hours freely given by members of faith communities every year, the monetary value alone of their time is in the millions of dollars. People of Faith are among our most motivated volunteers in society!

The conference will run from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 3, at the Anglican Parish of St Mary the Virgin on Craigmillar Avenue in St John’s. We anticipate several hundred participants and the Anglican Church will provide lunch. As an extension of Synod in 2016, I am inviting representation from every parish and I encourage you to join us. You can register to attend by contacting the Reverend Christopher Fowler at (709) 576-6697 or by email at cfowler@anglicanenl.net. The planning and coordination of this event is already underway and further details and information will be forthcoming in the days ahead.

With my every blessing,

The Right Reverend Dr. Geoffrey Peddle

Bishop of Eastern Newfoundland & Labrador

REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN!

FAITH in the PUBLIC SQUARE is a gathering of members of the Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist and other faith communities along with community partners and representatives of municipal, provincial and federal levels of government, exploring the place of faith in society today and the ways in which faith is expressed outside of places of worship. Recognizing that most Newfoundlanders and Labradoreans identity with a faith community, we will investigate their impact on society, especially in areas of social concern.

Special guests, including the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson and Sister Elizabeth Davis, will be presenting to the gathering their views as to what has been the most important contribution of faith communities to society in days past, what their most important role is today, and where they see the future of faith in our society tomorrow.

They will also share some personal experiences of their faith journey and how they live their faith in the public square.

The conference will culminate with a panel discussion, of which those gathered, as well as those participating through social media, may ask questions and contribute to the discussion as to living faith in today’s public square.

Lunch will be provided and registration is free. Seating is limited and will be reserved as registrations are received.

We invite you to join us as we explore living faith in the public square.
